I spent much of my life feeling broken. College, graduate school for counseling psychology, and years of talk therapy didn't change that feeling. Sadly, my experience is not unique. Just look around the world of foster care, and you’ll see the lasting impact of toxic stress and trauma—broken relationships, “bad behavior,” and hopelessness seem to be all around.
But what if that’s not the whole story? What if my story isn’t about brokenness as much as it is about survival? What if the teenager in my office who just had an epic meltdown when he had to say goodbye to mom is actually incredibly brave? What if the neurodivergent student who seems to be pushing all your buttons is the most courageous kid you’ve ever met? Superheroes are born from adversity!
You are not broken.
“That kid” is not broken.
There’s hope.
I'm so glad we're in this together!
